Having enough planets in the out rings to ensure that a path forms around all parts of the star is may also be required. The key to getting pirate bases out of the way is to make the pirate base its own ring (like most maps do) and give it a very small distance from the star, so they shouldn't block a path around the star. I don't know if all these options are in the map designer as I make random maps by hand in notepad, but random maps are actually defined as a series of rings around a star that can have certain types and numbers of planets within a specified distance of the star. I assume we're talking about random maps made with the map maker, not the galaxy forge, as you can always specify where exactly you want planets with the latter. If you need something more specific: I'm looking for a way to almost always have pirates either branched on their own phase lane with nothing else connected to it, or least always pushed off to the side that won't cut players off completely from the rest of the map.

Otherwise, I'm just gonna have to deal with putting pirate bases on unoccupied systems (rendering them harmless to players earlygame), or not have them in the game at all. I could really use some help here, some advice on map making I can use that can reduce this from happening. I want to make a map and I want pirate bases on each solar system, but every single time I test the map, there's at least 1 solar system that has a pirate base spawned in that will completely block a player off from the rest of the game. This is probably my biggest problem right now, actually.

Kinda kills the fun, if all you need to stop an AI threat, is to be lucky a pirate base is blocking the short path and they're too lazy to go around.Īnd there's another problem I'm having with pirates: The randomness of map generation, and it causing pirate bases to completely block a player off from the rest of the solar system or the rest of the entire map for that matter. I have no personal quarrel with pirates myself, but the AI isn't perfect and I've seen several times that their entire growth can be completely halted because a pirate base is nestled in the middle of a shortcut the AI want to take. I'm having a real problem with pirate bases and involving them in making maps.
